Kids Jiu-Jitsu at Clark Gracie La Jolla Jiu-Jitsu

We have just moved to San Diego and my kids are having a hard time making new friends. I began researching kids jiu jitsu San Diego and stumbled upon Clark Gracie La Jolla Jiu-Jitsu. Of course, wanting to make sure I encourage my children to try the “right” type of sport, I figured I should do some research on why jiu-jitsu would be good for my children. I must say, all of my findings were positive.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) teaches children a non-violent form of conflict resolution. On the same token, if my child is being bullied, then she will know how to defend herself until help shows up.

BJJ teaches self-discipline. If your child is prone to flying off the handle, they will learn how to control themselves (see non-violent conflict resolution).

  • BJJ promotes physical activity in a fun and safe environment.
  • BJJ increases socialization skills. Your children will make the best of friends at the gym!
  • BJJ teaches important teamwork skills.
  • BJJ instills respect and patience.
  • BJJ teaches children how to take care of their health, especially since the chances of injury occurring is pretty realistic at some point in time.
  • Children suffer from stress just like adults. BJJ helps to reduce stress in children and provides them with an outlet.

Research in hand, I began my search for gyms in the La Jolla area, and I found Clark Gracie La Jolla Jiu-Jitsu. They offer Lil Lions classes for children ages 4-7, and Jr. Lions classes for children ages 8-13. I was pleased to see that that their curriculum matched the findings in my research.

The Little Lions class introduces the younger kids to the rules of the mat. They work on agility and discipline. When they are ready, they will be moved to the Jr. Lions class. This class prepares your children to move up to the fundamentals class. In addition to teaching techniques for self-defense and anti-bullying, your child will also start to understand the competitive aspects of the sport.

Clark Gracie La Jolla Jiu-Jitsu is a great gym and is good for all ages. It will give your kids the environment they need to help them grow and succeed with the sport. Their focus will improve and they will build friendships built on trust and a love for a sport that they can practice for a life time.

Lear to Defend Yourself, Take a Women’s Self Defense Class

By | women self defense | No Comments

I have met many people over the years that have practiced Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) and I have always been fascinated by it. Of course, I am also a huge MMA fan. I have just never been brave enough to step into a martial arts gym. My curiosity has led me to search for the place that I would like to begin my journey.

Since I’m in my 30’s, I figured I should probably start slow, so I began my search by looking for women’s self defense classes that are offered at BJJ gyms. I figured I could gingerly step foot into the gym and observe the classes, while learning how to defend myself. Jiu-Jitsu is a great method for self defense for women because it helps us to prepare to take care of ourselves if the need arises. My search led me to La Jolla Jiu-Jitsu.

I reviewed their website and description of the women’s self defense class. There were many things listed that appealed to me, but what really got me was the opportunity to learn how to turn an attacker into a victim in an emotionally and physically challenging environment. As a women it is important to feel safe in the environment that you are training in. Especially when it comes to a sport that is dominated by men. You want to feel safe training with both the men and women. La Jolla Jiu-Jitsu provides just this environment. It is intimidating enough just stepping foot in a martial arts academy, you don’t want to be intimidated on the mats too.

I say all of this because my experience with what started as “just” a self defense class has morphed into a lifestyle. The gym is my home away from home. My training has turned me from being high stress to more level headed. My three girls have benefited from this change as well as my husband and co-workers. Most importantly, I have learned that I can do SO many more things than I realized, even with beginning at 30. I react to things differently because I know what I am capable of and it is very empowering.

So, take my advice. Head over to La Jolla Jiu-Jitsu, try their women’s self-defense class. Learn how to defend yourself. Become a role-model to those kids out there. Realize your strengths and work on your weaknesses. Join the most supportive sisterhood you can find. I promise, it will be the best decision you will make.

Another Day at Kids Jiu-Jitsu Class:

If you’ve spent too much time loading your kids into the car, you’ve probably wound up at one of the beaches of La Jolla. Whether it’s the wide beach at La Jolla Shores, watching the seals at the Children’s Pool, or to swim in La Jolla Cove, all you want is to get your kids away from the electronics for a day to do something physical. You’ve spent too much money on sunscreen and you notice the kids aren’t swimming anymore. They’re just digging holes in the sand. They still need exercise but they’re not interested in team sports. Their minds need to be challenged.

Martial arts teach kids mental discipline and a physical skill. Kids jiu-jitsu classes at Clark Gracie La Jolla Jiu-Jitsu gives them an opportunity to achieve individually within a community of other children. Clark Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, located right in the village at La Jolla, teaches skill and discipline right where you live.

kids jiu-jitsu la jollaJiu-Jitsu is a sport and something more. Kids can work their way up; attaining promotions to a new belt or a new stripe. Tournaments give them an opportunity to test themselves against others at the same level. Rolling (the term jiu-jitsu uses for sparring) gives kids a chance to test themselves even if they never enter a tournament. Jiu-Jitsu requires taking your opponent to the ground, choosing from a number of holds or leverage points to do it. It’s not just about how physically skilled you are, but how clever in the way you choose to attack.

Your child gains confidence with a brand new group of friends. Not only do they learn to respect an opponent, they learn how to congratulate the victor afterward. Boys and girls learn the sport together, discovering just how similar they are. Sportsmanship is part of the code of behavior for jiu-jitsu, not just the rules of a game.

Think of the self-confidence any young man or young woman would take back to school. There’s no scary situation with an older or bigger kid they won’t be prepared for. Your child will know when and how to walk away from any conflict. If they ever run into a real bully with no avenue of escape, your kids will be prepared for that too.

Life is not just a day at the beach. Find out more about kids jiu-jitsu classes at La Jolla Jiu-Jitsu.
